Yacht Club Santo Stefano was founded in 1960. its first headquarters was on the “Spluga”, an old brig built in Porto S. Stefano which was totally restored and berthed alongside Porto S. Stefano old main pier. This original “office” soon became famous, and not only in Italy, and gave place to many meetings and rendezvous of all the V.I.P. frequenting Argentario, such as the Dutch Royal Family. As commercial development of the little town was increasing, it was no more possible for “Spluga” to be further more anchored there, so Yacht Club Santo Stefano moved to the second and current branch, on the jut on Cala Del Pozzarello in the marvellous Villa Cortesini. This new location is at the very centre of a gulf which is also an excellent “playground” for sailing races and one of the most renown in Italy. Yacht Club Santo Stefano’s activities have led to three different sections of sailing: sailing courses, starting from Olimpia Courses, still training hundreds of sailors, secondly open-sea regattas, and least but not last all those activities related to Olympic classes.
Open-sea regattas began with Genova-Porto S. Stefano, whose first edition was won by Xingù by Lancia. Fifteen editions of “Settimana Velica Dell’Argentario” followed, with the participation of the top Italian sailors, such as Vallicelli Senior, Carcano, Marina Spaccarelli, Straulino, Bernotti and Pellaschier. Nowadays the major events of Yacht Club Santo Stefano are “Pasquavela”, taking place during Easter weekend, and “Settimana Velica Dell’Argentario”, taking place during June.
